Shelter Guard

The other day, we had a client schedule an appointment for a gutter cleaning. As soon as our team arrived, we knocked on the door, as usual, just to have a quick conversation before getting started. During our chat, he mentioned that it had been about two years since his last gutter cleaning service.

We explained that we normally recommend cleaning gutters at least twice per year because of all the debris that can build up over time. However, he told us his case was “different” because there were only two trees near his house.

That conversation inspired us to write this blog post.

If this sounds familiar, you may want to double-check the last time your gutters were cleaned. Let’s break down what happened and help you better understand why gutter maintenance is so important.

Dirty Gutters that will create future problems.

What Are Gutters Actually For?

Gutters are designed to protect the foundation of your home by redirecting rainwater away from the structure. Their job is to move water safely away from your roof, siding, and foundation so moisture does not create expensive damage.

In simple words, gutters help protect one of your biggest investments: your home.

But here’s the problem if gutters are not maintained properly, they cannot do their job correctly.

What Happens When Gutters Get Clogged?

Many homeowners think clogged gutters only happen because of leaves and branches. While those are common causes, they are far from the only ones.

Gutters can also become clogged by:

  • Dirt
  • Sand
  • Pollen
  • Roof granules
  • Small debris carried by wind and rain

Over time, this buildup prevents water from flowing properly through the gutter system. Instead of draining away from your home, water gets trapped.

And trapped water creates problems.

Some of the most common issues caused by clogged gutters include:

  • Rotten wood
  • Damage to fascia and soffit
  • Water leaks
  • Foundation issues
  • Rusted gutters
  • Detached or sagging gutters from excess weight

When gutters hold pounds of standing water, it becomes only a matter of time before damage starts to appear.

“I Only Have a Couple Trees Near My House”

This is one of the most common things we hear from homeowners.

Our customer believed that because he only had two trees near the house, frequent gutter cleaning was unnecessary. Unfortunately, that assumption is very common — and very wrong.

Even homes with very few trees can experience clogged gutters because debris travels through wind, rain, and roof runoff. It is not only leaves that cause problems.

Sometimes the worst damage happens slowly and silently because homeowners rarely look at their gutters. Since gutters are installed high up on the roofline, they are easy to ignore.

And what we ignore over time can turn into a very expensive problem.

How Often Should You Clean Your Gutters?

There is no “one-size-fits-all” answer.

The frequency depends on:

  • The number of trees around your property
  • Your location and weather conditions
  • The type of gutter system you have
  • The age of your roof

However, there is one recommendation that works for almost every home:

At minimum, gutters should be cleaned twice per year.

Routine cleanings help prevent major repairs and avoid unexpected surprises.

Other Ways to Protect Your Gutters

Besides regular cleanings, there are a few things homeowners should keep an eye on.

1. Inspect Your Gutters Regularly

Even a quick monthly inspection can help you spot:

  • Loose gutter sections
  • Rust spots
  • Sagging areas
  • Overflow stains
  • Water pooling near the foundation

These small warning signs can prevent much bigger issues later.

2. Consider Gutter Guards

Gutter guards can help reduce the amount of debris entering your gutters. However, they are not maintenance-free.

Leaves can still collect on top of them, and dirt or smaller debris can still get underneath over time. That means inspections and periodic cleaning are still necessary.

Prevention Is Always Cheaper Than Repairs

At our company, we always encourage homeowners to focus on prevention rather than waiting for a roofing emergency.

Since we are also a roofing company, every time we clean gutters we take advantage of being on your roof to check for other potential problems, including:

  • Pipe boot damage
  • Roof leaks
  • Hail damage
  • Early signs of roof wear

Catching these problems early can save homeowners thousands of dollars in future repairs.

Need Help Maintaining Your Gutters?

If you are trying to save money, gutter cleaning is not the service you want to postpone. Small maintenance today can prevent major expenses tomorrow.

That is why we offer Service Plan Discounts that allow homeowners to schedule multiple gutter cleanings per year, save money, and receive additional roofing service benefits.

Whether you have one tree or twenty trees near your home, your gutters still need attention.

Because in the end, it is not just leaves you should be worried about.
